1. Leila Seth passes away

2.India’s 1st Private Small Arms manufacturing plant
• India’s first private sector small arms manufacturing plant has been inaugurated in Madhya Pradesh.
• It is a joint venture between India’s Punj Lloyd and Israel Weapon Systems
• It will produce four products — X95 carbine and assault rifle, Galil sniper rifle, Tavor assault rifle and Negev Light Machine Gun

3. Second unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project has been shut down
• The second unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project has been shut down due to water and steam leakage.
• Nuclear power is the fourth largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydroelectric and renewable sources of electricity
• As of 2013, India has 21 nuclear reactors in operation in 7 nuclear power plants, having an installed capacity of 6780 MW and producing a total of 30,292.91 GWh of electricity while 6 more reactors are under construction and are expected to generate an additional 4,300 MW.

4. World’s first “ladies special” suburban train completes 25 years
• It was on 5 May, 1992, that the first ladies special ran between Churchgate and Borivli stations on the Western Railway.

• Western Railway presently operates eight ladies special services daily, divided equally during the morning and evening peak hours

5. Drinking water standards have improved in India
• World Water Council (WWC) recently carried out a major survey on water awareness in India.
• As per the survey, more than one-third of Indians think that not enough is being done to achieve the UNs Sustainable Development Goals to make water and sanitation for all a reality by 2030.
• 31 per cent of Indians said they had been in a situation where it was unsafe to drink water.
• 71 per cent of Indians said that safe drinking water had improved over the last five years.

• In a major restructuring in the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banking space, the government hasappointed heads of various public sector banks.

2. Law banning excessively thin models has come into effect in France
• France has banned unhealthily thin models as part of a new law targeting “unrealistic body images” and eating disorders.

1. Shiva Thapa wins Silver medal at Asian Boxing Championships
• Shiva Thapa becomes the first Indian to claim three back-to-back medals at the continental showpiece.

• 29th edition of the Men’s Asian Amateur Boxing Championships was held from April 30 to May 7, 2017 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

2. India clinch bronze medal at Sultan Azlan Shah Cup
• India’s 4-0 victory over New Zealand helped them clinch Bronze medal.
• Great Britain won Sultan Azlan Shah Cup while Australia was runner up.
