Article Name: Labour and Artificial Intelligence: Visions of despair, hope, and liberation
Author Name: Anupam Guha
Source: Hindustan Times
Category: Technology

Summary for this article:

In this article, the writer talks about the threat to human labour with the Artificial Intelligence(AI) coming into picture.

AI is unique in that it can rather cheaply replace a vast spectrum of mental, creative, and intuitive human labour says the writer. Also, unlike many machines that cannot be considered human-like AI however can perform creative or empathic types of labour. This poses a huge threat of humans being robbed of their jobs.

What’s the solution? The worst could be to do nothing which could only lead to neo-liberalism.

The technocrats are offering a solution of implementing Universal Basic Income wherein an individual would be granted minimum pay irrespective of them ending up as mere couch potatoes which for the very reason invalidates this option

There is another way the author suggests in which AI would not be considered AI as a technological artefact alone but rather as a component of public policy as well.
But, who would control the AI remains a vital question. A serious discussion is the need of the hour to address this and the management of the future led production by the AI.

The author concludes by saying that incorporating the AI for the public good could be a viable solution
