Let his monthly salary be (s)
40% on education expenses  = 0.4s
=> 0.4s x 60/100 = 0.24s is on purchasing books
=> ½ ( 0.4 – 0.24) = 0.08s is on stationary items
=> So money left will be 0.4s – ( 0.24s + 0.08s)= Rs 0.08s
Now Acc. to the 2nd statement
1/4 ( 0.08s) =160
=> 160 x 4/0.08 = Rs 8000
